Suspicion has an unfortunate habit of arriving before evidence.

Most people look at someone and confidently announce that they are "reading people."
They aren't.
They haven't established a baseline.
That presents certain difficulties.
Some of them remarkably expensive.
Hence this Field Note.
Baseline.
No mystery.
That is precisely the problem.
People are attracted to mystery.
Reality generally prefers the ordinary.
Rather inconveniently, the ordinary is usually where the valuable information resides.
Reality has once again demonstrated questionable marketing instincts.

MATTER FOR THE OBSERVATION DEPARTMENT
A measuring instrument that cannot be calibrated is generally regarded as decorative.
Observation follows much the same procedure.
Without a baseline, every measurement appears equally convincing.
This considerably simplifies decision-making.
Reality has repeatedly expressed reservations.
Imagine a man who speaks unusually quickly.
Without a baseline, the interpretation seems straightforward.
"He is nervous."
Perhaps.
Or perhaps rapid speech is simply how he has spoken for the past twenty years.
If that is his ordinary state, the anomaly is not fast speech.
The anomaly would be slow speech.
That distinction is operationally important.
Without it, every signal becomes whatever the observer wishes it to become.
History suggests this has never been an especially reliable methodology.

DECOMPOSITION OF THE HARMLESS PHENOMENON
Baseline is not behaviour.
It is expected behaviour.
The distinction is modest.
The consequences are not.
Every observation acquires meaning only in relation to what normally precedes it.
Speed.
Volume.
Gesture frequency.
Posture.
Eye contact.
Silence.
None of them possess intrinsic meaning.
They borrow it from the baseline.
Context, rather inconveniently, keeps rewriting that baseline.
Which makes context considerably more useful than certainty.
Imagine a university student moments before delivering a presentation.
A racing heartbeat.
Restless hands.
Rapid speech.
None of these are particularly remarkable.
They belong.
Now imagine the same student standing perfectly still.
Breathing calmly.
Speaking with unusual precision.
Without visible tension.
That deserves attention.
Not because calmness is suspicious—
—but because it violates expectation.
Professional observation rarely asks,
"What did the person do?"
It asks,
"Should this person be doing that under these circumstances?"
The two questions enjoy an excellent reputation for being confused.
Only one consistently produces reliable deductions.

WHY PEOPLE FAIL
Or: An impressively efficient method of misunderstanding almost everyone.
The human brain is remarkably economical.
It reaches conclusions with admirable enthusiasm.
Waiting, unfortunately, has never been among its preferred hobbies.
One observation becomes a conclusion—
before the remaining observations have even entered the discussion.
A loud person becomes confident.
A quiet person becomes shy.
A smiling person becomes trustworthy.
Reality seldom approved these shortcuts.
Volume may be compensation.
Silence may be concentration.
A smile may be strategy.
Or simply habit.
The behaviour remains identical.
The explanation does not.
This is precisely why observers establish a baseline before assigning meaning.
Otherwise, every gesture becomes a blank cheque written to the imagination.
The imagination has an unfortunate record of spending freely.

BASELINES ARE CONTEXTUAL
People do not possess a single baseline.
They possess several.
Reality objected to simplicity at a remarkably early stage.
The same individual behaves differently:
with friends,
at work,
during an interview,
after three hours of sleep,
or after receiving unexpectedly good—or remarkably unfortunate—news.
The behaviour changes.
The individual often does not.
An experienced observer therefore avoids asking,
"What is this person like?"
A considerably more useful question is:
"What is this person normally like in this situation?"
The difference appears grammatical.
It isn't.
Context continuously rewrites expectation.
Expectation continuously rewrites interpretation.
Ignore the first—
and the second becomes little more than creative writing.
Many observers mistake circumstance for character.
A tired executive becomes "cold."
An anxious student becomes "deceptive."
A quiet passenger becomes "antisocial."
The conclusion is satisfying.
The evidence usually isn't.
Context deserves considerably more respect than it generally receives.
Fortunately for observers—
it asks for none.

Watson: "That gentleman appears nervous."
Holmes: "Perhaps."
Watson: "He has checked his watch six times."
Holmes: "Indeed."
Watson: "Surely that tells us something."
Holmes: "Only if he did not spend the previous ten years doing precisely the same thing."
Watson: "Then what have we learned?"
Holmes: "That a habit and an anomaly occasionally wear identical clothing."

THE ERROR OF FIRST IMPRESSIONS
First impressions are not observations.
They are hypotheses enjoying extraordinary publicity.
The mind produces them with admirable speed.
Evidence, regrettably, travels more slowly.
A person enters the room wearing expensive clothing.
Confidence.
Authority.
Success.
The verdict arrives almost immediately.
The investigation has yet to begin.
Appearance is information.
It is rarely sufficient information.
Observers who mistake the first explanation for the correct explanation seldom notice they have stopped observing altogether.
The first impression is not the problem.
Treating it as the conclusion is.
The experienced observer therefore allows first impressions to exist—
but refuses to promote them.
Not until reality has been offered an opportunity to object.
Reality has developed a persistent habit of accepting that invitation.

🔎 HOLMES NOTE
The unusual can only be recognised by someone who has first learned the ordinary.
An anomaly is never an independent fact.
It is a comparison.
Without knowing what normally happens, one cannot honestly claim that something unusual has occurred.
Most deductions fail long before logic enters the conversation.
They fail when expectation is mistaken for observation.

Beginners frequently mistake unfamiliar behaviour for abnormal behaviour.
The distinction appears subtle.
It is responsible for an astonishing number of incorrect conclusions.
Watson observes a deviation.
Holmes first asks whether a deviation exists at all.

📌 INVESTIGATOR'S RULE
Never explain a deviation before proving it is one.
The temptation to interpret arrives almost immediately.

CLOSING OBSERVATION
Suspicion possesses an unfortunate advantage.
It usually arrives before evidence.
The human mind welcomes it enthusiastically.
Evidence, by contrast, insists on taking its time.
Baseline exists for a remarkably simple reason.
It prevents the first from impersonating the second.
Most observation errors are not failures of perception.
They are failures of calibration.
The observer did not misread the behaviour.
The observer never established what normal looked like.
The deduction therefore failed before it began.

Captain. Your assignment, should you choose to accept it.
Visit a café.
For the first ten minutes, you are forbidden from searching for anomalies.
No deductions.
No psychological profiling.
No fascinating theories.
Only one task is permitted.
Establish the baseline.
How loudly do people speak?
How quickly do they move?
How often do they check their phones?
What appears ordinary?
Only after those ten minutes may you begin looking for deviations.
You will probably discover something interesting.
It will not be the other people.
It will be how impatient your own mind has become.
Observation begins by resisting the urge to explain.
